ST. LOUIS – KSDK reports two 17-year-olds are facing charges in connection with the incident that left an off-duty police officer and a suspect shot in north St. Louis.
Police say officers started following a stolen car around 10 p.m. Wednesday. When officers threw a spike strip at the car in the area of West Florissant and Riverview, that’s when police say the suspects fired at them. Officers backed off, but still followed the path of the car.
The car stopped near Park and Astra Avenues when police say shots were exchanged. An off-duty officer heard the commotion, came out of his house to help, and was shot in his arm. Further investigation revealed the he was injured by a fellow officer. The off-duty officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition. He’s a 38-year-old, 11-year veteran of the force.
Seven police officers have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
One of the suspects — Deandre Chaney, 17 — was hit in the ankle. Police took him and another suspect — 17-year-old Cortney Smith — into custody. They say one other suspect is still on the loose.
Chaney was charged with felony fleeing, first-degree tampering and seven counts of armed criminal action. Smith was charged with felony fleeing, second-degree tampering and seven counts of armed criminal action. Both are being held on $500,000, cash-only bonds.
Investigators recovered two guns from the scene. Police say the car was stolen from Maryland Heights on June 15.
