AUBURN, Alabama- A 3-year-old girl died Saturday afternoon when she fell into a grease trap and drowned at an ice cream parlor in Auburn, according to a report by

The tragedy occurred at Bruster’s Real Ice Cream on East University Drive, police said.

“As the owner of the Auburn Bruster’s, our deepest condolences go to the family of the child who tragically died Saturday. They are acquaintances of ours and have been regular customers. We are truly heartbroken that this happened,” the owners said.

According to police, video evidence from the scene showed the girl was playing with two of her siblings when she apparently fell through a lid covering one of the grease pits on the property.

Police said no foul play was suspected and the death investigation indicates the girl drowned in the sludge that was in the six-foot deep in-ground container. The girl’s death is being ruled an accident.
