At 8:12 a.m., a store employee confronted the suspects in the parking lot as they were loading the diapers into a vehicle. A customer saw the confrontation, and went to assist the employee, Nieves said.
Nieves said the customer noticed that one of those involved may have been reaching for a weapon. Nieves’ news release said, “While helping the employee, the customer felt threatened by one of the suspects, who the customer believed was arming himself. The customer who had a firearm of his own fired to defend himself and the suspects all jumped into their red vehicle and attempted to flee.”
One of the alleged shoplifters was hit. They tried to drive away, but crashed into two vehicles in the Wal-Mart parking lot. The 19-year-old who was shot ran across the street to a Citgo station, where he fell. He was taken to ORMC, and was later pronounced dead. The other three ran away and are still at large.
