“Although her time on earth was very short, she had touched the hearts of many and will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by all those who loved her.”

LEBANON, Missouri-  The Laclede County Prosecutor’s Office says they have  filed a class A felony Child Abuse complaint on a 26-year old Lebanon man, in connection with the death of a two-month old infant, Gracelyn Jade Nickel. The child was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital in Lebanon on Tuesday, March 27 according to Sheriff Millsap in a press release.

Kyle Alan Nickel was arrested by the Laclede County Sheriff’s Office and Missouri State Technical Assistant Team (STAT) on Saturday March 31, 2018. The arrest occurred at the Lebanon Police Department after Nickel was interviewed by investigators from the Sheriff’s Office. Nickel was the biological father of the child. According to court records, Mr. Nickel was born in 1991. A Probable Cause Statement was filed this morning.

The Sheriff says Laclede County Sheriff Deputies, Lebanon Rural Fire Department and Mercy EMS, were called to the 28000 block of Pelican Drive in Laclede County on Tuesday evening shortly after 6:00 p.m. The 911 call came from a relative of the infant, who lived next door to Nickel and the child’s mother. The caller said the child was not breathing. The child was unresponsive at the scene, but was transported by ambulance to the hospital where she was pronounced dead by the attending physician.

At the hospital the child had a noticeable injury, and the Sheriff’s Office  says they began a criminal investigation. On Friday March 30 an autopsy was conducted in Springfield, Missouri. During the autopsy an injury was discovered consistent with blunt force trauma to the head.

David Millsap, Sheriff of Laclede County

“These are tough cases to work; I was pleased with the teamwork of our investigators and the STAT investigator. STAT brings in another level of expertise in child abuse cases and are a valuable resource to call on,” said Sheriff David Millsap.

Nickel is being held without bond in the Laclede County Detention Facility.
