UPDATE: Sgt. Bill Lowe with the MSHP says they have received a tip that murder suspect Ian McCarthy may be in Chilhowee, Mo. McCarthy is alleged to have killed Clinton police officer Gary Michael during a traffic stop Sunday night. There is a heavy police tactical presence there now.
CLINTON, Missouri- A Clinton police officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop and a manhunt is now underway. The officer had been with the agency for less than a year and leaves behind his wife and step-children.
Officer Gary Michael, 37, died after exchanging gunfire with a suspect near the intersection of East Green Street and North 2nd Street (MO Highway 13).
KSHB reports the shooter then fled in a Dodge Nitro and crashed the car just two blocks west. Tactical teams have cordoned off the area around the crash as they work to locate the suspect, the report said.
Michael was transported to Golden Valley Hospital in Clinton, Missouri, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol has named Ian McCarthy, 39, of Clinton as a person of interest.
The patrol says the public is advised against making contact with McCarthy, who is considered armed and dangerous.
The reason for the traffic stop was a registration violation and there is no dashcam video.
Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control, the Clinton Police Department, and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate. Officers from all three departments are currently searching for McCarthy.
