JOPLIN, Missouri- A press release says Joplin officers were attacked by two men who threw explosives at them during a traffic stop just before 3:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Reports say police stopped a truck pulling a trailer at 4th and Sergeant for not having trailer lights. The officer made contact with the two men inside the truck, 34-year-old Keith Wald of Joplin, and 22-year-old Nathan Felton of Neosho. As another officer arrived and exited his vehicle, one of the men threw an device out the window that exploded.
The truck then fled the area and officers began an immediate pursuit.
At E Street and Sergeant another device was thrown out of the vehicle, causing a second explosion. An additional Joplin officer who was responding for assistance lost control at Lone Elm and Surrey andstruck a tree. The chase continued into Cherokee County Kansas, where police lost contact at Highway 400 and Messer.
No officers were hurt by the explosions and the officer involved in the accident declined medical treatment. Wald and Felton are wanted for First Degree Assault on Law Enforcement along with other charges.
