LEBANON,Missouri- Local sources are reporting there is currently a homicide investigation taking place in the 500 block of Sweet Street.

The Lebanon Police Department has confirmed the investigation to a news agency.

Lebanon police responded to the area on a call about a verbal altercation. They located a male gunshot victim in the roadway and attempted lifesaving measures, however the victim was later declared dead at the scene. Police say the deceased man is 47 years-old.

He has been identified as Gary Don Peterson.

According to police, they have identified a person of interest listed at 39 years-old and are trying to locate the individual. He apparently fled the scene following the shooting which seems to have stemmed from the verbal altercation.


The Lebanon R-III School District issued the following statement this morning:

“The Lebanon R-3 School District was notified of a shooting last night, Tuesday, June 5th, that occurred near Lebanon High School. After talking to local law enforcement, it was concluded the act was unrelated to our schools and we have no reason to believe students or staff are at an increased risk. Safety and security are a priority for our schools on a daily basis. Standard precautions will be taken for Summer Experience, with a heightened awareness in light of the recent event. Law enforcement will notify the District if any risk levels change and we will take additional precautions at that time.”
