NEOSHO, Missouri-  Jeff Lehr with The Joplin Globe reports a man accidentally shot in the back this morning at a gun range near Neosho is undergoing surgery at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.

Newton County Sheriff Chris Jennings said the shooting took place about 10 a.m. at the conservation area gun range east of Neosho. The name of the man shot has yet to be released. The sheriff said he was uncertain of his medical condition at this time.

Jennings said the victim was positioned at the seven-yard line of the range, about 15 yards forward of the man whose gun discharged a .380-caliber round into his back.

“He was putting his gun back together,” the sheriff said of the man who accidentally shot the victim. “There wasn’t a magazine in it. But apparently there was a round still in the barrel.”

Jennings said the slide went forward and discharged the round as he was reassembling the gun.
