LEBANON, Missouri- Mayor Josh Ray alleges that the Ward 2 City Council member took umbrage with not being re-appointed to a board position.
This is what the mayor said about the incident:
“In Last night, Ward 2 Councilwoman Sheila Mitchell called me sexist and verbally attacked me. This appears to have been due to my unwillingness to reappoint her to the personnel board… a board that over the last year has been entirely female and of which two of those members I get along with very well. My decision to not reappoint her to that board was for multiple reasons, but most of all it was because I want that board to have a heart for the city employees, just as I do. I felt someone else would be better in that role.
In last night’s meeting, she also made remarks about me not being in city hall when she goes there to look for me, even though I received no phone calls or texts from her yesterday.. When I responded that I was working my day job at the time, she made a remark concerning me talking about my lack of wealth and how hard I have to work. In a lapse of judgment, I replied that, unlike her, I don’t have vacations to Hawaii and Italy to talk about, so I talk about what I know… family and my anemic bank account.
To top it all off, she insulted me because I “want to be in charge.” What was said there in open session for the entire audience to hear was a clear indicator that what I’ve been fighting for is true. Some politicians do not want the mayor to be in charge. Those same people surely do not have the average, everyday citizens of Lebanon (including our city employees) at heart.
These things I talk about are open session, public conversations. I’m not “airing dirty laundry” or revealing secrets. I am simply stating things you all would know by attending last night’s meeting. I was fortunate enough to have a larger than normal audience to witness the ridiculous behavior of Councilwoman Mitchell. The citizens in attendance can vouch for this post.”
In other notable action from the meeting, the proposed fair grounds arena building was approved.
