MILLER COUNTY, Missouri- A Miller County Deputy Sheriff was killed in a two-vehicle crash Friday evening on Route Y in the county.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says Deputy Casey Shoemate, 26, of Eldon was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. His remains were taken to Phillips Funeral Home in Eldon. Sources say Shoemate had been employed by the agency for about a year.
Troopers say Shoemate was southbound on Route Y with lights and sirens activated and was attempting to pass another vehicle when he was struck head-on. The other driver has been identified as Robert Levin,65, from Florisant Missouri. A photo from the scene shows both vehicles resting along the side of the highway facing forward at about a 90 degree angle to the roadway. Levin suffered serious injuries and was taken by air ambulance to University Hospital. No charges have been filed according to online records.
Trooper Newbold responded to the scene at 5:50 p.m.
This was only the second line-of-duty death for the Tuscumbia-based agency; Deputy Sheriff Sandra Belle Wilson was shot and killed on December 10th 1991 while participating in a search for a subject who also killed another deputy.
This is a developing story.
