BREAKING: An additional shooter has been reported at FLL, people seen running from Terminals 3 & 4. More patients reported.
Scanner traffic indicated a Border Patrol agent running and indicating “shots fired.” That was quickly discounted but then an additional report came in of people fleeing. Law enforcement is now responding to “multiple shooters at multiple locations.”
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida- The Sun Sentinel reports that several people have been shot and one person is in custody after shots were fired at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
“We have multiple people dead and a subject in custody,” said Joy Oglesby, spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Oglesby was unable to provide additional details.
The incident happened in Terminal 2, near the baggage claim area.
A former White House press secretary, Ari Fleischer, has been tweeting from the airport. His initial tweet at about 1 p.m. indicated that shots had been fired and people were running.
About 10 minutes later a second tweet indicated that the situation has calmed down and there was a heavy police presence.
Aerial images show a group of about 100 people on a tarmac outside one of the terminals, the report said.
Rescue personnel from multiple agencies are at and around the airport in order to find and treat potential victims.
Gene Messina said he was waiting for his friends to get off a plane around 12:50 p.m. when the shooting happened.
“All of a sudden I heard screaming and running, people coming form security, yelling he as a gun he has a gun!,” Messina said.
He said everyone ran to the back of the terminal. He was outside standing on the runway as he spoke on the phone.
Traffic to and from the airport is being affected. Anyone with flight plans should check with their carrier.
