BELMAR, New Jersey- The Belmar Police Departments says the San Gennaro Festival which was to continue on Sunday, September 18th 2016 has been cancelled due to recent events and concern for public safety. No specific threat was cited.

Authorities say they have not yet detaianed a suspect after a “pipe bomb-style” detonated in a garbage can along the route of a 5K run and walk to benefit military soldiers in Seaside Park, New Jersey.

An improvised explosive device went off in Chelsea, Manhattan injuring 29 people Saturday night. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said early indications are that the explosion at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue “was an intentional act, ” but he says there is no link to terrorism. A undetonated pressure-cooker type bomb was found four blocks away. It is not known if there are explosive materials inside the cooker. Wires and what looks like a cell phone are attached to the device. Investigators are still working on the case.

Two pressure cooker bombs that killed 5  and injured more than 200 were used in the Boston Marathon bombings in April 2013. The pressure cookers were filled with nails, ball bearings, and black powder. A remote device was used to trigger the bombs.

The San Gennaro Festival which was to be held over the weekend, featured  Italian foods, live entertainment, dancing, a beer and wine tent and crafters.
