The sheriff confirmed to FOX 25 Monday morning that the unnamed teen was arrested for using a crossbow to shoot and kill 10-year-old Austin Almanza Saturday near 980267 S. Pecan Meadows.
The broadhead arrow shot from the crossbow traveled through Austin’s body and struck his 8-year-old brother, Ayden, who was standing behind him. Austin died on scene while Ayden was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been released from the hospital, the report explained.
Sheriff Charlie Dougherty says his office is treating the incident as a homicide. The suspect is currently being held in a juvenile detention center. The sheriff’s office anticipates turning over its findings to the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office Monday. Dougherty says the boys were playing when the incident occurred.
The suspect was given the crossbow as a gift. Both Austin and Ayden attended White Rock Elementary School. The juvenile suspect attended a middle school in the county.
