ROLLA, Missouri- On December 3, 2018 at approximately 8:30 P.M., the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Beulah, Missouri resident for First Degree Assault, Armed Criminal Action, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon following a shooting incident on Private Drive 6537 and Missouri State Route K in Phelps County.

On December 3, 2018 at approximately 7:00 PM, deputies of the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported shooting incident at the entrance to the Cedar Ridge Ranch on Private Drive 6537 and Missouri State Route K. An adult male was reported to have been shot at that location and was being transported into Rolla by his wife in a personal vehicle. The victim, who was later identified as Ross M. Mackey, age 52, of Beulah, Missouri; suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen. An ambulance from the Phelps County Ambulance Service met Mackey’s vehicle as it was en route to the hospital, and provided final transport to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla . Mackey, who suffered serious physical injury as a result of the gunshot wound, was later conveyed to the University Medical Center in Columbia .

An investigation by deputies and detectives of the Sheriff’s Department identified David A. Gates, age 54, of Beulah, Missouri as the suspect shooter. Gates fled the scene after the shooting and went to his residence on the property of Cedar Ridge Ranch, located on Private Drive 6537. Gates was taken into custody without incident. Gates was transported to the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, where he was questioned by detectives. Probable cause was established in the investigation that Gates assaulted Mackey causing serious physical injury. Gates is currently incarcerated in the Phelps County Jail pending warrants from the Phelps County Associate Circuit Court
