ROLLA, Missouri – Rolla Police say a registered sex offender tried to abduct an a 8 year-old child in the 100 block of Belmont Drive in Rolla.

On November 6, 2018, the Rolla Police Department received a call about a suspicious individual attempting to lure an 8-year-old female juvenile into his car. Officers from the Rolla Police Department responded, but were unable to locate the suspicious male. An area canvass was conducted, and pertinent information related to this case was obtained.

On January 23, 2019, Detectives received additional information and conducted immediate follow-up, which lead to the identification of a suspect. During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the suspect came to the Rolla area to assist in delivering reading material. Investigators also learned that he had frequented additional communities in Missouri and Illinois for the same reason. The suspect is currently on the Missouri Sex Offender Registry.

Rolla police say as a result of the investigation, a warrant was issued in Phelps County for Gilbert L. Burkhart of Poplar Bluff, MO for one count of Attempted Child Kidnapping. Burkhart is currently incarcerated in the Butler County Jail on unrelated charges. Burkhart’s bond for the new charge was set at $250,000.00

Assisting in this investigation is the Poplar Bluff Police Department and the Butler County Sheriff’s Department., police said in a release.

In 2017, court records show he had failed no register as a sex offender in Poplar Bluff. That case is not disposed.

He was also charged in 2015 with attempting to manufacture, distribute or produce a controlled substance. That case is still pending as well.
