WASHINGTON, District of Columbia- President Trump has responded to Senator John McCain’s appraisal of him during the Vietnam POW’s Liberty Medal speech.
Trump said in a radio interview with WMAL that “people have to be careful because at some point I fight back.” The president then added “I’m being very, very nice but at some point I fight back and it won’t be pretty.”
The president’s words cap an ongoing feud between the two since Trump inferred McCain was not a war hero because he was captured in Vietnam.
These menacing words were in response to McCain’s remarks during the Philadelphia speech , “To abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe, to refuse the obligations of international leadership for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history.”
McCain is often a target of hard-line conservative Republicans who feel he too often shares similar views with liberals and progressives.
Former Vice President Joe Biden presented McCain with the Liberty Medal Monday night sharing stories of how the two worked together in the senate.
Former President Barack Obama also sent a congratulatory tweet to the Republican who is facing a grave cancer diagnosis.
I’m grateful to @SenJohnMcCain for his lifetime of service to our country. Congratulations, John, on receiving this year’s Liberty Medal.
