HOLLYWOOD, California- No, Bonnie and Clyde were not to blame.
Many thought La La Land had won the Oscar for Best Picture Sunday night, but it seems Warren Beatty had immediate doubts when he glanced down at the just unopened red envelope. Faye Dunaway thinking Beatty was just stalling for dramatic effect read out the wrong winner aloud, it was the card for the previously presented Best Actress. Moments later in an embarrassing situation the corrections were made.
PricewaterhouseCoopers, which has overseen the Academy’s ballot-counting process for 83 years has issued the following apology:
“We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.
We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.”
