This was Gabel’s 2nd major crash on Hwy 63

ROLLA, Missouri- The Missouri State Highway Patrol says a Rolla man died after a crash on Hwy 63 Sunday morning. The single-vehicle wreck happened one mile south of the city near the fairgrounds.

Karl Gabel, 55, was pronounced deceased by Dr Abusbeih at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center.

Troopers say the southbound Ford Ranger driven by Gabel traveled across the center line then went off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle then hit a fence and a tree. It is not known if Gabel was wearing a seatbelt.

Trooper Fair responded at 8:30 a.m. and was assisted by Trooper Crawford in the investigation.

Gabel was involved in a December 2013 rollover crash, also on Hwy 63. The 2009 Chevrolet HHR he was driving struck a curb and overturned impacting a traffic light pole before catching fire. He was non-responsive but a bystander cleared his airway after pulling him from the crash. He was transported for treatment. Speed may have been a factor in that incident according to witnesses.
