SANIBEL ISLAND, FloridaSanibel Police officials say the suspect who shot a police officer on the island Sunday evening is in custody.

The suspect was taken into custody in the Dunes neighborhood after exchanging gunfire with officers from the Sanibel Police Department, NBC 2 reports.

According to police, an officer was shot and injured during a routine traffic stop around 8 p.m. The officer was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.

The suspect fled the scene and was located in the 1400 block of Sandcastle Road.

Residents of the Dunes neighborhood were told to lock their doors and stay away from all windows. The police department has given the neighborhood the all clear.

The Sanibel Causeway and Periwinkle Roads were shut down. The Causeway has since reopened.

Police say Sanibel traffic will remain impacted as the department works three separate crime scenes.
