ST. LOUIS, Missouri  KMOV says a St. Louis Metro  police officer was shot and an investigation is underway.

The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Jefferson and Cherokee. Police Chief O’Toole said in a brief statement to the media early Thursday that the officer shot is a detective with 25 years experience on the force. He was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder and is in stable condition.

O’Toole said the officer was part of of a stolen car investigation in the area. He said a suspect fire upon the officer while he was in his vehicle, the news report explained.

No suspect information has been provided by police.
