PHELPS COUNTY, Missouri- A three-vehicle crash involving two semis and a van has claimed the life of a St. Louis area woman Sunday afternoon on I-44.
At 01:33 PM, the Doolittle Fire Protection District says that along with Phelps County EMS, they were dispatched to the 173 eastbound mile marker for a head-on motor vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer and another vehicle. DRFPD Rescue Pumper 6614, Utility 6619, Utility 6629, and Brush 6618 responded, they said. Within the first 2 minutes, dispatch has upgraded it to an accident with entrapment involving a tractor trailer rollover that had rolled over on top of a mini van with heavy entrapment. Due to the confirmation of heavy entrapment from the bystanders on scene, mutual aid was requested by the City of Rolla Fire Department for extra manpower and equipment.
Upon arrival of Doolittle Fire Protection District, they found a heavily damaged tractor trailer off the roadway on it’s top with a mini van underneath the tractor trailer. It was quickly determined that the driver of the mini van was heavily entrapped and in very critical condition. The crew from Doolittle 6614 immediately began extrication, they said. Once Rolla City Engine 34 arrived, they assisted with extrication. After approximately 30 minutes of extrication, the patient was able to be removed from the vehicle but unfortunately had sustained fatal injuries.
The MSHP has identified the deceased victim as 52 year-old Margaret Carter from Maryland Heights. She was taken to Null and Son’s Funeral Home.
Troopers say that the crash occurred as semi operator Zukhriddin Khayrullaev, of Mason Ohio lost control went off the roadway, and returned to strike another tractor-trailer. The Khayrullaev truck then crossed the median and hit Carter head-on.
